The Man with the Bucket Hat

July 5, 2021

I have a complete set of Faber Castell pencils/charcoals and with it came a set of Graphite Aquarelles. They range HB, 2B, 4B, 6B and 8B and I thought I’d give them a try. I sketched up my idea on watercolor paper, a photo I acquired from Unsplash I believe. And you can use the pencils to render it and tighten up the details. Then you use water and a watercolor brush and the lines liquifie into a nice watercolor effect. I’ve debated as to whether these are actually “watercolors“ or “graphites”. The end result is a watercolor

Alisa Makes a Meany Face

June 16, 2021

This drawing was motivated by my sister and how she was wearing her hair that day. I thought it was different and since I’m fighting with drawing hair or to be more precise trying to find my own way in drawing hair I thought that her style that day would present me with a challenge.

For Claire - A Facial Study

June 3, 2021

This facial study began as a hair exercise. Back to the drawing board, I've found subtle hints at hair work better than meticulously drawing each strand. ProCreate brushes aid in indicating hair structure, yet I often pull back until I feel confident, until mastery is achieved. Patience is key; I'll gradually refine my approach, so please bear with me.

The Stretch

May 7, 2016

Created in Adobe Sketch, this gestural figure drawing was later transferred to Tayasui Sketches for watercolor details. Originating from my older iPad pre-2018, I likely employed a Wacom Stylus or the old Pencil tool before the advent of the Apple Pencil. With no reference, I tested the combination of pen and ink, mimicking traditional mediums like watercolor—my go-to in the past.

Myself Sometimes

Another Self Portrait that kind of reflects my mood at the time. I was a paramedic two years at this point and I’ve seen a lot of things, a lot of darkness that kind of weighs on you. I didn’t go into blindly I was an EMT for 4 years already so I knew what I was getting into. But as a medic you are responsible for the lives of the people who call on you and the staff you are working with. It gets heavy.

Casseopeia

June 15, 2015

This artwork is a nostalgic throwback to my pre-college and college days, aspiring to illustrate for Heavy Metal Magazine. Immersed in sci-fi and influenced by artists like H.R. Giger and Moebius, I dedicated time to crafting storylines and pen-and-ink panels. Despite my efforts, none met the standards for Heavy Metal Magazine, which favored French/European artists. Art school introduced me to Frank Frazetta, Kelly, Vargas, Elvgren, and Soriyama, leaving a lasting impact.

A Creole Woman #3 - Introspection

May 26, 2021

This drawing is from one of my personal photo references. I’m going to start using more images from my personal catalog instead of the amazing image references I find on the internet. I originally got into photography so I could create a reference library for my illustration when I was still doing pen and ink and airbrush illustrations so long ago. I have tons of images I could reference and I’m going to start using that resource.

Garden District

May 2, 2021

This work is a break-away effort in my work to try to incorporate more of a story than just a facial study. The background was actually a photograph I taken of a building in So. Baton Rouge near the Garden District and the man is an unlicensed reference image from Unsplash

Portrait of Art Blakey

April 25, 2021

I started out drawing this on my iPad Pro then went to traditional charcoal on Strathmore 500 Mixed Media heavy paper. I was ok with the outcome but then I returned to the digital version and completed the digital version early this morning. Both versions took about the same time but the traditional version is a lot smaller than the digital.

Nubile Ambitions

November 26, 2015

Digital oil painting done on iPad using ArtRage with a Pencil stylus. This work is from one of my old photo references and then added texture to get the relief. The model and photograph was at my Las Vegas studio. She was lit by reflected northern light and set in an open bay door. Most of the day a nice soft light could be achieved. I also used some hot lights to get the warmth and movement.
